Abstract

One of the elements which describes towns is their adminstrative status. In practice it shows the incorporation into the country’s collective territorial governing system and can confer a town with governing body functions. This assignment examines the influence of the adminstrative status on the development of Latvia’s towns. Since the adminstrative status concept includes the significance of the status of a territory’s adminstrative centre or town and allocates its position among hierarchic levels, it can affect a town in different ways. Beginning with its recognition and ending with overall development. To describe the adminstrative status’ influence, other influential factors and their relevance have to be judged. How a town is affected by the regional adminstrative centre’s role can be assessed by comparing towns, giving special attention to medium-sized and small towns. In this assignment as an example has been chosen Madona and its development over a lapse of time. Becoming a territorial unit’s centre, a town’s significance within a region changes. One of the decisive reasons in these changes in this case is the administrative status. In Latvia, that is shown by the territorially administrative reforms which have happened and concern for this investigation is given because of a territorially administrative reform which occurred recently, concluding in year 2009. This investigation is being completed with the support of publications and statistical data. Key words: adminstrative status, development of cities, administrative center, territorial division.
