Abstract
Description
The Article deals with the role of Biblical person names in The Book of Lamentations by Grigor Narekatsi (1001-1003) in the poetical context, distinguishing two main functions of their use as the text elements: first – the referential or relational function; second – the poetically – esthetical function. Although Biblical person names comprise a numerically small lexical part of Lamentations, they function as important and considerable structural elements of the text which play an important role in the author’s system of the religious ethical categories of sinfulness. The Biblical person names are obliged to bring about connotations of behavior and choices of the particular person, and, being included in similes, metaphors and figures of recitations, they enhance the power of expression and figurativeness of the text. The concluding part of the article illustrates the use of theonyms (name of god) Beliar and Ball in different contexts of Lamentations and shows the transformation of the semantics of the person names. Thus the insight in the theological and poetical system of conceptions of Grigor Narekatsi is given.
