Abstract
In the paper “Kakure Kirishitan – Japan’s hidden Christians” author offers a research of one of little-known Japanese religions – Kakure Kirishitan – hidden Christians. Despite the fact that number of this religion’s followers is relatively small and they didn’t have any significant influence upon Japanese society, they succeeded to create their own religious system which includes rituals, tradition and symbols. During the research of Kakure Kirishitan faith in the context of Japanese religious consciousness the author wants to study out if this religious community could be seen as a derivation of Christianity or it tends to be an autonomous type of Japanese syncretic religious identity. By means of this analysis author inspects interaction between this religion and traditional Japanese religions – Buddhism and Shinto, and also searches parallels with teaching, tradition and symbols of Roman Catholic Church. The author also describes the place of Kakure Kirishitan in history and in present day and inspects the problem of their religious identity. Keywords: Kakure Kirishitan, hidden Christians, Christianity in Japan, syncretism, Shinto, Buddhism.
