Abstract
The amount of plastics that enter the surrounding environment is increasing around the world. Due to the wide distribution and persistence of microplastics, it is important to obtain more information on the way it is transported and places of possible accumulation, including beach-cast algae on the sea coastline. The aim of the bachelor’s thesis is to evaluate beach-cast algae on the Baltic sea coastline as a potential microplastic accumulation matrix. Literature analysis, treatment of the collected macrophyte algae and sand, visual assessment of the obtained plastic particles and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis has been done as part of the thesis. The amount of plastic particles per cm2 in all algae samples was significantly higher than in the reference sand samples without macrophyte algae, which indicates that beach-cast algae is a potential microplastic accumulation matrix on the Baltic sea coastline.
