Abstract
The Bible and its interpretations of it is the center of Christian theology. Despite that, the way biblical texts are read has not attracted enough attention in the scholarship. In the course of “Biblical Interpretations in the Theology of Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church” the information of how LELC representatives perceive and interpret the Bible is compiled and analyzed. After the shortcomings of LELC are identified, possibly, helpful insights of theories of deconstruction and feminist criticism are offered. The closing chapter substantiates why new contextual biblical interpretations are necessary, based on examples of the New Testament. During the course of the paper, the following thesis is promoted: The problems of LELC hermeneutical approach which arise from narrow interpretations of the text can be solved by elements of deconstruction and feminist hermeneutics. Hopefully, this paper will serve to both promote more discussions of the theology of LELC and a broader discourse of how hermeneutics are interconnected with church doctrines, policies, and attitudes towards different societal processes.
