Abstract
The Master’s thesis are devoted to the work of notorious late 18th century and early 19th century scholar and amateur-historian Johann Christoph Brotze who depicted an described in his collection various historical objects in surroundings of Riga, including the small manors mostly used as summer residences for the citizens of Riga. The materials dealt with in this work were collected by Brotze from 1771 to 1818, and are treated as a unique source of cultural and social history of Riga and the life of city inhabitants during this period of time. In the Master’s thesis only the materials published in four volumes from 1992 to 2007 were used for investigation. During the late 18th and early 19th century the number of small residence manors around Riga and in the suburban territories increased greatly being used for the sake of one’s social prestige and leisure, as well as for economical activities of their owners. Considering that the wood-constructed buildings of these residences have today become an endangered heritage in many cases, it is important to keep an eye on these objects. This is actually why the subject of Master’s theses is still the one of on-going investigation process, as well as the scientific resource of Brotze’s drawings and descriptions.
