Abstract
Apsuciema fen is included in Habitats Directive as calcareous fen with Cladium mariscus and Schoenus ferrugineus and with Vertigo whorl snails populations. Two whorl snail species of genus Vertigo (V. angustior and V. geyeri) are listed in Annex II of the European Habitat directive. Snails are able to reside in calcareous habitats because of their ability to assimilate calcium. The results of this research show that in Apsuciema fen has developed three zones of vegetation, in which whorl snail composition differs. The best conditions for snails where bryophyte dominated, whilst Cladium mariscus dominant zone provided unfavorable conditions. Conductivity and pH demonstrated changes in mineral element amount, while plant species and its dominance outlined fluctuation of elements throughout the habitat.
