Abstract
This work presents a general overview of the dominant trends in the Christian apologetics of the 20th century. Special attention is paid to the role of the Word of God in the apologetics. It is shown that apologetics is something that the Church does in the culture and society. There is also a discussion about the term “the defense of faith” which is often present in modern apologetical literature. Further there is a detailed analysis two most popular apologetical traditions – presuppositional and classical apologetics. Emphasis is put on the place of the Scripture in these traditions. Besides these two apologetical traditions the author also analyses the work of Karl Barth who is famous with his rejection of classical apologetics. This work underlines that the 20th century Church is an apologetical institution, and the apologetics are based on the God’s Word.
