Abstract

In Latvia consumption of electricity is growing rapidly with each year and in the future shortfall in power capacity is projected. The aim of this research is to study the potential of alternative renewable energy sources and their impact on environment in Latvia. Renewable energy sources have considerable potential, the use of which would substantially reduce environmental pollution and the quantity of imported energy. In general, also the public acceptance of renewable energy sources is positive. The potential of wind energy is relatively high both on land and at the sea. However, by the application of the Leopold matrix in assessing impacts on environment, were found several major impacts of wind farms on birds, bats, benthic organisms’ populations, as well as human health and domestic comfort. Key words: power industry, renewable energy, wind energy, nature protection, Leopold matrix, Latvia.
