Abstract
This collection of the text series “Onomastikas pētījumi / Onomastic Investigations” contains articles by toponym and anthroponym researchers from 10 countries who in 2012 participated in a conference commemorating the 100th anniversary of Latvian toponymist Vallija Dambe. These articles analyze placenames and personal names used in various countries, as well as theoretical issues of onomastics. The placename studies presented in this issue reveal both their origins and the impact of language contacts. Some of these names are derived from other onyms (including plant names and ethnonyms). Their researchers are focusing on various aspects of toponyms – from the generic terms they contain to the triviality in their usage. Meanwhile, the other articles are discussing historical, borrowed, and official vs. unofficial anthroponyms; they analyze their semantic elements and the motivation of name-giving, as well as the development of anthroponymy in a multilingual environment and the issues of rendering them from one language into another.
