Abstract
The aim of the graduation paper is to analyse military and political aspects of the January 1991 crisis in Latvia, because its reasons, devolopment and results haven’t been analysed in Latvian historiangraphy as a complex of events and facts. The essence of the crisis is characterized by the attempts of the enemies of the idea of Latvian independence to take over the power and the threat of military attack from the Soviet leadership. Situation in January was also destabilized by the attacks of the special occasion police units. After that, when the special occasion police units attacked the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Latvia on 20th of January, the situation in the country started to stabilize, because the enemies of Latvia’s independence idejas abjured from their demend to overthrow Latvia’s parliament and government, but USSR leaders were ready to start negotiations with leaders of our country about the relationship between both countries.
