Abstract
The work is devoted to the theology of 20th century Christian mystic, Trappist monk Thomas Merton, which clearly shows a component of the apophatic mysticism. The paper deals with the basics of the Christian apophatic tradition in order to ascertain to what extent Merton has adhered to the model of the classical apophatism and how the cultural and historical environment has become the reason for its modification. The writings of the 5th–6th century mystic Pseudo-Dionysius are taken as the basis for the classical tradition of mysticism. The research has confirmed author's thesis that the theology of Thomas Merton integrates and socialises the aspects of the Neoplatonic Christian mysticism. The title of the Bachelor's paper is Apophatic Mysticism in the Writings of Thomas Merton. The thesis of the Bachelor's paper is: The theology of Thomas Merton integrates and socialises the aspects of Neoplatonic Christian mysticism.
