Abstract
The aims of this bachelor’s thesis are to determine how the ideological positions of Kārlis Ulmanis authoritarian regime were represented in the newspaper “Rīts” during nationwide celebrations in the last years of the regimes’ rule, and to establish which holiday –November 18th or May 15th – was rendered as the most important one. The theoretical base of this thesis consists of an examination of the importance of ritual communication and its use in politics, as well as a look at the problems associated with the content and definitions of rituals. The research results show that during the analyzed period of time the regime attempted to present the 15th of May as the most important yearly national holiday, while diminishing the relative importance of November 18th. The ideological meanings expressed in publications devoted to the celebrations, show attempts on the part of the ruling regime to carry out a policy of assimilation of national minorities, ensure the peoples’ obedience to the regime and present The Leader Kārlis Ulmains as the main guarantee for the continuing existence and stability of the Latvian state.
