Abstract
The History and the Qur’ān engages the followers of earlier revelations (ahl al-kitāb) in dialogue to reflect upon the historical events and the messages (ayāt) of the Qur’ān. The call of the Qur’ān to the people of earlier revelation (ahl al-kitāb) remains eternal in its eternal message. So the believers in the Qur’ān are provided with the general and clear guidelines how to remain in conversation or dialogue with the so called „People of Abrahamic” traditions. This paper first clarifies the essential Qur’ānic concept of (ahl al-kitāb) the People of earlier revelation, then it points out the historical events of the dialogue between ahl al-kitāb and muslims. It describes the general guidelines of the Qur’ān for inter-religious dialogue in particular between Jews, Christians and Muslims. The paper is divided into three parts, the paper begins with definition of ahl al-kitāb, then it goes over the treatment of ahl al-kitāb under early period of Muslim rule, and concludes by referring to the Qur’ānic reflection on ahl al-kitāb.
