Abstract
This paper examines the problem of whether the concept of sustainable development is compatible with the notion of “intrinsic value” as proposed by the environmental philosophy. The aim of the work is to present the problems of the concept of sustainable development within the socio-economic discourse and its position in relation to the environmental philosophy. In the first chapter, the author describes leading positions of environmental philosophy on the value of nature and the role of man in the preservation of environmental diversity. The second chapter deals with the origins, meaning and critique of the concept of sustainable development. In the third chapter, the theoretical framework is presented, as well as the analysis of the example of political discourse is performed. The author concludes that sustainable development is conceptualized from individualistic and anthropocentric value premises within the leading economic paradigm. The author provides recommendations for a better integration of environmental philosophy into a practical discipline that is related to sustainable development.
