Abstract
Every year, large amount of phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon flow into the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. These nutrients not only cause eutrophication and dead zones, but also have a negative impact on the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. Given the magnitude of nutrient loads, it is important to monitor trends in sediment accumulation, as this is a crucial process for removing nutrients from the ecosystem. During the development of the bachelor thesis, previously collected sediment samples from the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga are subjected to chemical analyses and the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen they contain is determined. Sediment samples were collected from a total of 19 stations, but in this thesis samples from four stations will be analysed and studied. Two of these stations are located in the Gulf of Riga and two in the Baltic Sea. A total of 87 sediment samples will be analysed. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to investigate the concentration and long-term accumulation trends of nutrients in the sediments of the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea by studying several sediment cores.
