Abstract
The aim of the master’s thesis 17th Century Latin Occasional Poetry in Riga in Scientific Research Texts is to explore the specific features of occasional poetry in scientific disputation texts paying attention to its functions and thematic variety. The author has advanced a hypothesis, that every occasional poem, which is written in honour of the defence of scientific disputation text, is aimed at the glorification of the addressee’s personality and aggrandizement of publicity, apart from the contents, theme and significance of the disputation. The theoretical part is based on studies of Livonia historical sources, as well as on studies of 16/17th century and contemporary scientific literature about occasional poetry and scientific disputation texts. The practical part of this thesis deals with functions of occasional poetry, themes and its relation to the contents of scientific disputation texts. Research results affirm the advanced hypothesis. The translation of occasional poetry of Riga is included in the appendix of master’s thesis, which, is accessible in master’s thesis printed version in the Department of Classical Philology.
