Abstract
Latvian prose and prose criticism of 1970s exists within the Soviet cultural policy. Due to the fact that the Soviet ideology is focused on organizing and controlling the intellectual processes of the society, it is important to ascertain whether literature criticism can be sovereign in totalitarian conditions – both in literature evaluations and critical writing. During the research process it was established that in the 1970s two forms of prose criticism were present: the ideological one and the liberal one. The first one refers to criticism engaged by the ideology, but the second – an alternative to the official criticism, which tends to bypass the norms of socialistic realism. With the help of comparative and typological method, analysis of critical writing and theme and genre-based systematization was conducted, and a comprehensive insight into the evaluation criteria and principles of text formation used in ideological and liberal criticism of prose was gained.
