Abstract
The English writer Jane Austen’s novel Northanger Abbey and her personality have been a very suitable topic for literary critics. Austen lived and wrote at the very center of Romantic era, however, her literary works were not influenced by Romantic Movement. She created her own style and so typical themes for her as irony of routine life of country families, marriage for property and others. Jane Austen’s contestable manner of writing, contradictious criticism and her personality caused a deep interest and intrigued the author. The aim of the thesis is to identify coherence between illusion and reality depicted in Northanger Abbey. The additional reasons for this research is to reveal possible motives which induced Jane Austen to parody the Gothic novel in Northanger Abbey, and finally, what is the lesson of the novel. The Bachelor thesis consists of introduction, three chapters and conclusions. In the first chapter the controversial genre of Northanger Abbey which is still a disputable issue among literary critics, is analyzed. Jane Austen’s possible reasons that caused writing Northanger Abbey in parody style of the Gothic novel are explained. The second chapter discusses the way of Catherine Morland [protagonist] meets the “real world”. The third chapter pays attention to other characters and their interaction with Catherine Morland. Their relations disclose the lesson the protagonist has learned.
