Abstract

The thesis is devoted to the research on the interaction between the complex and ongoing processes of innovation in the forest sector in small and medium-sized enterprises. Analysis of the three theories of Sociology (Innovation diffusion theory, Actor network theory, Sectoral innovation system approach) has provided an understanding of the complex nature and the diversity of the interaction in innovation, as well as prepared the knowledge base for the theoretical model development to study the innovation interaction in small and medium-sized enterprises in the forest sector. Using the case study and qualitative analysis method, the empirical research has explored 11 examples of innovation, and in-depth analysis of two innovation cases has been performed. Summarizing the explored theory and empirical information, the author has formulated the conclusion, the thesis to be defended and raised possible themes for further research. Diverse interactions and agents in the forest sector, small and medium-sized enterprises is being studied as a single entity rather than separate processes. Innovation in the forest sector small and medium-sized enterprises is dynamic, diverse, but the interactions of complexity are weak. Innovation involves both human beings and non-living things, technical and technological artifacts. Thesis comprises 176 pages, consisting of an introduction, six chapters and the conclusion part. Thesis has five annexes. Thesis was developed in the time period from September 2008 to October 2012. Dissertation results are tested in eight publications and by participating in six conferences. This work has been supported by the European Social Fund within the project «Support for Doctoral Studies at University of Latvia».
