Abstract
The current research deals with the usage of punctuation in the social network Twitter. As the Internet has already changed the way people write, the purpose of this paper is to find out if the owners of Twitter account keep to the standard punctuation rules when tweeting. The analysis included looking through approximately 500 tweets from 160 Twitter accounts to observe if the punctuation marks are used correctly or not. The results show that many people encounter some problems when using particular punctuation marks, e.g. commas or dashes; however, as the sentence structures in Twitter are very simple, mostly people are able to observe punctuation rules. It was also observed that younger people make mistakes in punctuation more frequently and that emoticons are used frequently.
